Actual and Volumetric Weight for Air Cargo

An explanation of actual weight, volumetric weight, and chargeable weight in air cargo.

Air cargo compares Actual Weight measured on a scale with Volumetric Weight derived from the space occupied by the packed shipment. The higher figure generally becomes the basis for Chargeable Weight.

The divisor, rounding method, and minimum charge can differ by carrier and service, so a provisional calculation is not the final freight amount. Reducing unnecessary package volume may help when goods are light but bulky.

What to prepare

  • Measured weight after final packing
  • Outer dimensions and unit for every package
  • Measurement including protruding parts
  • Pallets and reinforcement included in the packing profile
  • Volumetric formula applied by the selected carrier
  • Final Chargeable Weight and minimum-charge terms
