Pre-shipment Checks for Batteries, Liquids, Powders, and Chemicals

Classification records and carrier checks for cargo that may require special handling.

Batteries, liquids, powders, adhesives, paints, and chemicals may be classified as general cargo or Dangerous Goods depending on composition and hazard. Appearance or a trade name alone is not enough to determine acceptance.

Prepare objective manufacturer information such as a current Safety Data Sheet (SDS), composition, UN Number, and battery specifications. The carrier decides acceptance after reviewing packaging, quantity, route, and aircraft or vessel conditions.

What to prepare

  • Current SDS and exact product identification
  • Applicable UN Number, Class, and Packing Group
  • Liquid volume, powder weight, and container material
  • Battery chemistry and manufacturer specifications such as Wh
  • Leakage, short-circuit, and approved-packaging requirements
  • Carrier pre-approval and required declarations
